Codelean’s Third ScrumMaster Course Draws International Participants
Friday, February 05, 2010
The third ScrumMaster course organized by Codelean, Inc. was held at the Onyx room of the Diamond Hotel on February 3–4, 2010. It was attended by twenty participants from different companies who were mostly unfamiliar with how this management framework is conducted.
Led by Bas Vodde of Odd-e, a Singapore-based consulting company specializing in training and coaching individuals and companies in agile software development, the course teaches the participants the principles of Scrum from the basics to a more extensive explanation of the steps that an organization should take in implementing the management philosophy.
“This course is very interesting, as I’ve been a project manager for a long time,” said Allan Lescano of Value Commerce. “It’s a different view from where I am right now, but there are definitely good things that I picked up from this course.” The Development Lead of Value Commerce, Alexander Laryutin, adds, “It is definitely what our company needs. We will try to adopt it as soon as possible. It is our goal for 2010.”
“Since it is not a widespread practice in the Philippines yet, we still need to convince the upper management that Scrum is the way to go, but I believe that this will be beneficial in the long run,” says Ranel Abitona, Director of Development for Lakeside Technologies. On the other hand, Tommy Wallo of ORC Software has seen Scrum being practiced in some parts of his company for almost three years and he flew in from Hong Kong to learn more about it.
“Scrum is not a process. It doesn’t tell you how to do work. You have to figure out how to work yourself—or for yourself,” says Bas. For many of the attendees, Scrum is exactly what they are looking for to improve the overall productivity in their respective companies. Steering away from traditional project management methods, Scrum lets individuals do their job by “letting the system set the constraints instead of managing around them.”
